The Eflare UB290 Helicopter Landing Zone Kit provides emergency responders and aviation ground personnel with a portable system for marking temporary helicopter landing areas. Five high-visibility UB290 LED beacons deliver 360-degree light distribution without the flame, smoke, heat or residue associated with pyrotechnic flares.

The kit is available in two configurations: four amber beacons with one blue beacon or four red beacons with one blue beacon. Each beacon includes a wind-rated aviation base, and the complete system packs into an included storage bag for transportation and organized deployment.

How the UB290 Beacons Operate

Each UB290 beacon uses a twist-control lens. Rotating the lens selects flashing or steady-on operation. The positive-activation microswitch helps prevent accidental activation or shutoff during deployment.

When the beacon is switched on, a battery-status light is visible through the top of the lens. Green indicates satisfactory battery condition, amber indicates an intermediate level that should be monitored, and red indicates that the batteries should be replaced.

The manufacturer recommends removing the batteries during extended storage. Batteries should not be replaced in an area where an explosive gas atmosphere may be present.

Why Aviation Bases Matter

Unlike the standard flat rubber base used for many roadway and general warning applications, the aviation base has taller mounting teeth intended for aviation and higher-wind environments. This provides a more secure foundation when the beacons are deployed on suitable outdoor terrain.

All five beacons in this kit include aviation bases. Plain rubber bases are not supplied with the landing zone kit.

Does this kit use UB290 or AT290 beacons?

The current kit uses Eflare UB290 beacons. The older AT290 beacon is not included.

What are the two available kit configurations?

AFR-HLK-A includes four amber UB290A beacons and one blue UB290B beacon. AFR-HLK-R includes four red UB290R beacons and one blue UB290B beacon.

Does the kit include aviation bases?

Yes. Five wind-rated aviation bases are included—one for each beacon. The kit does not include standard plain rubber bases.

Are batteries included?

No. Each beacon requires four AA batteries. Twenty AA batteries are required to operate all five beacons.

Can the beacons flash or remain continuously illuminated?

Yes. UB290 beacons provide both flashing and steady-on operating modes. The mode is selected by rotating the lens.

How long will the batteries operate the beacons?

The UB290 provides approximately 40 hours of operation using four AA batteries. Actual runtime depends on battery quality, operating mode, temperature and other conditions.

Are the UB290 beacons weather resistant?

Yes. The UB290 is rated IP66, meaning its enclosure is protected against dust and powerful water jets when properly assembled.

Can the landing zone kit replace an agency’s operating procedures?

No. The kit provides portable visual markers, but safe helicopter operations still require trained personnel, an appropriately selected landing area, established agency procedures and coordination with the flight crew.
