Safety Tip of the Week:

Week of April 22, 2019

Drones for military use are an effective means of surveilance of an area that is unsafe and also a great way to avoid casualties.  When it comes to OSHA, the use of drones is becoming more of a reality!  Initially they were being used following worksite accidents and for areas that were considered too dangerous to enter.  But now it is becoming an efficient way to scope out a facility for inspection.  Currently OSHA can only use drones when it is agreed to by the employer.  There is a fine line that OSHA or any organization should not cross so that its trade secrets cannot be compromised.  Unless an emergency warrants the use of a drone or an employer agrees to the use of a drone during an inspection, then that strategy should be acceptable.  Drone use is going to increase dramatically in the very near future.  It just depends on how far the reach goes.  When used as a helpful tool to help save lives and used as the first line of access to a hazardous situation, it can only benefit everyone.  But there needs to be a rules so that rights are not violated.  Read more in EHS Today about OSHA Drones.

Testing for alcohol with Drager tubes is efficient and inexpensive.  Alcohol testing equipment may be too impractical to take into the field, so that is when Drager Alcotest Tubes are perfect for mobile alcohol testing.  These tubes are quick to use and give immediate results for traffic safety use, correctional facilities and industrial use.  When testing for alcohol, it is recommended that the test is given at least fifteen minutes after the last drink is consumed.  Immediately after consumption of alcohol, a high alcohol content is present in the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat.  This mouth alcohol level would provide a false alcohol level if testing is done within fifteen minutes of consumption.
To perform the test for alcohol with the Drager tubes, the tips of the tube are opened and the tube is connected to the the breathing bag.  The person being tested exhales into the tube and inflates the bag.  If alcohol vapor is present in the exhaled breath, the yellow indication layer turns green.
Alcotest CH00222: When the green discoloration zone reaches the annular ring, it can assumed that the alcohol concentration corresponds to 0.5‰ B.A.C.
Alcotest CH00199: When the green discoloration zone reaches the annular ring, it can assumed that the alcohol concentration corresponds to 0.8‰ B.A.C.
