Safety Tip of the Week:

An eye wash station is necessary in all industries that handle chemicals and hazardous materials.  The temperature of the flushing fluid is just as important outdoors as indoors.  Most are concerned about the temperature in the winter going below 60 degrees and not being ANSI compliant, but another concern is the flushing fluid exceeding 100 degrees.  This can happen in industrial areas without air conditioning and outdoors where sun  exposure heats the water to uncomfortable levels.  When installing an eye wash station, take into consideration all seasons and climate changes.

Speakman's SE-364 Single Element Thermostatic Mixing Valve is capable of supplying 25 gallons of tepid water per minute which is enough for several emergency eyewashes.  The SE-364 comes with ball valves, check valves and a surface mounted enamel coated cabinet.  The SE-364 mixing valve is set at the factory to deliver 85ºF outlet flow.  The thermostatic cartridge responds to changes in the hot and cold water supplies.  If the element fails, the valve will provide cold water flow.  The ANSI Z-358.1 2009 standard states that the flushing fluid should be between 60 and 100 degrees fahrenheit.  The valve should be secured with lockout/tagout.
