Safety Tip of the Week:

An eye wash station is necessary in all industries that handle chemicals and hazardous materials.  The temperature of the flushing fluid is just as important outdoors as indoors.  Most are concerned about the temperature in the winter going below 60 degrees and not being ANSI compliant, but another concern is the flushing fluid exceeding 100 degrees.  This can happen in industrial areas without air conditioning and outdoors where sun  exposure heats the water to uncomfortable levels.  When installing an eye wash station, take into consideration all seasons and climate changes.

Heat Trace Emergency Shower

Heat Trace Emergency Showers

A Heat Traced Emergency Shower is necessary in cold and freezing environments where a combination shower is needed in case of chemical splashes on the body.

A heat trace emergency shower offer protection in freezing temperatures.  They should be used when the temperature falls below freezing and are designed for outdoor use and also in unheated buildings.   For optimal performance, the supply line for the shower should be freeze protected because water expands as it freezes and the line can expand to break the pipes or block or clog the system.

The Heat Trace Cable Wraps Around the Pipes to Keep Them Warm
A heat trace emergency shower has a heat trace cable that will protect the unit from freezing.  The heat trace cable is wrapped around the piping in order to regulate the temperature of the water inside.  The pipes are generally insulated with polyethylene foam and then wrapped in ABS plastic that has sealed seams.  This type of shower requires an electric source that can be supplied from either the top or the bottom.
