Safety Tip of the Week:

An eye wash station is necessary in all industries that handle chemicals and hazardous materials.  The temperature of the flushing fluid is just as important outdoors as indoors.  Most are concerned about the temperature in the winter going below 60 degrees and not being ANSI compliant, but another concern is the flushing fluid exceeding 100 degrees.  This can happen in industrial areas without air conditioning and outdoors where sun  exposure heats the water to uncomfortable levels.  When installing an eye wash station, take into consideration all seasons and climate changes.

Eyewash Preservative (Bacteriostatic Solution)

An eyewash preservative is a clear, colorless liquid that is used in a portable station to help keep the flushing fluid free of contaminants and bacteria.  One bottle of the preservative is put into potable water and will preserve the water between three and six months depending upon the manufacturer's instructions.

After the expired time period, the flushing fluid needs to be removed from the station. Fresh potable water, with a new bottle of eyewash preservative should be added.  Unused, the solution has a two year shelf life and should be stored between 36 - 104º F.
